What is it?
Criminal Justice is a system composed of three parts: Law enforcement, courts, and corrections. Through these three structures, criminals and crimes are recognized and examined. Law enforcement has the ability to investigate and arrest possible perpetrators; the courts acknowledge all evidence and evaluate guilt or innocence. Finally, if the suspect is found guilty, corrections enforce the given punishment.
Why is it important?
The criminal justice system provides individuals with peace of mind. It puts forth laws that create a safer environment. People have their own agency to chose to follow laws and respect their community, but, if they chose not to, they answer to the criminal justice system.
What can you do about it?
Speak out! Do your part as a member in your community to acknowledge injustice around you. Law enforcement may be the apprehender, but many times, they are not the witness. Attend your jury duty. Become involved in the court system and stay up to date on current incidents that have occurred around you.
