It’s crazy to think that it’s already Thanksgiving break! Finals week, Christmas, and New Years are right around the corner, and so I think it’s important that we all take a deep breath, a step back, and a look at our privilege.

When people talk about the “1%” it is important to know that they are real. The top 1% in the United States currently holds nearly $7 billion of the countries wealth, while the “other” 90% accounts for only $34,074. Stemming from this as of 2015 the average household income of the 1% was $691,649 while the average household income of the bottom 90% was only $34,481.

While I’m sure the majority of those reading this are not apart of the 1%, it is still an important injustice to recognize as it is affecting all of us.

To think that 264 million children are currently without proper education.

795 million people currently do not have enough food to live a healthy and active life. That is nearly 1 in 9 people. And the vast majority of these people reside in developed countries. (Despite this, of course, ⅓ of all food is wasted.)

As of 2017, 554,000 Americans were experiencing homelessness.

This week’s addition of Peace in Action intends to shine light on these (often overlooked) issues of privilege.
